Georgians can learn from Rupert Murdoch's high-asset divorce

When you think of a high-asset divorce, what comes to mind? Georgia residents who keep up with celebrity gossip probably think of contentious court battles over money, property and children. One recent high-asset divorce shows, however, that not all have to be that way.

Rupert Murdoch's recent split from his third wife, Wendi Deng Murdoch, serves as an excellent example of an amicable and well-executed high-asset divorce. The two brought their marriage to an end with a respectful settlement, divvying their shared properties without engaging in any publicized asset-division disputes. Part of the divorce agreement involved Deng receiving a Manhattan penthouse the couple held in common.

For high-profile couples like Murdoch and Deng who have children together, the circumstances surrounding a divorce grow even more complex. While it did not seem to in this case, child custody disputes can often wind up in court.

Benefitting Murdoch and Deng was the fact that they had done a lot of the work before ever deciding to get divorced. According to the New York Times, the couple had a prenuptial agreement and two postnuptial agreements that specified how their property was to be divided in the event of a divorce.

Although Murdoch's divorce is high profile, the same peaceful arrangements are possible for couples of any social standing. The Murdoch-Deng case shows that divorce does not have to be messy or traumatic. Whether you choose to implement a prenuptial agreement, a postnuptial agreement or can simply find a way to work things out on your own, reaching an amicable agreement out of court often results in the best-case scenario for everyone involved.
