Since Georgia has started promoting itself as a filming location for television shows, there have been even more stars relocating to and starting their lives in and around Atlanta. With The Vampire Diaries being filmed here, many of its stars have also made the move to Georgia. One such star, Zach Roerig, who plays Matt Donovan on the show, has also fathered a child with a Georgia woman. For the past two years, his child has been kept quiet, but he now has filed for a modification with the Georgia family law court to become his daughter’s sole custodial parent.
The court recently granted his request. The girl’s mother had been jailed for several crimes and it appears Roerig has been given both physical and legal custody of his daughter.
This story is a reminder that child custody and support are not set in stone. It appears that Roerig did not initially have custody over his daughter, but when her mother was sent to federal prison, he was able to step in and file for custody. This is just one example of why custody or support would be modified, but parents can apply for modifications whenever there is a significant change in circumstances.
Of course, when neither parent is incarcerated, it may be harder to prove to a judge that custody or support should be altered. The process itself can be difficult, which is why it is so important to work with an experienced family law attorney when circumstances change.
