Dramatic increase in number of mothers as heads of household

For years, many women in Cobb County made less than their husbands, but times are changing and it is estimated that 40 percent of women are the primary breadwinners. This means that either Georgia women are making more than their husbands, or that they compose a single-parent household. The is a dramatic increase from the only 11 percent of women who were breadwinners in the 1960s.

But when we think more about what this means, we see that there are a number of women who are single-parents and, as the custodial parent, they likely have a claim to child support from the noncustodial parent. With the median income of single mothers hovering around $23,000 a year, it is in the children's best interests to receive child support.

The research was done by the Pew Research Center as part of its analysis of the census data. What the study does not tell us, however, is what percentage of breadwinning mothers are married women who make more than their husbands and what percentage are single mothers. The difference between these two groups is marked, however, with family units headed by married women earning, on average, $80,000 a year and single mothers making only $23,000 per year. The average family income for families headed by men is in the middle at $57,100.

As we've mentioned before, child support is an important resource for custodial parents and is used to help bolster the funds necessary to take care of children. It helps protect against mothers being forced to cover all costs of having a child while the child's father is allowed to spend his money as he chooses.
