Although news of a celebrity couple headed for divorce court is well nothing new to many Georgians, not all divorces involving famous people are contentious or contested. Take Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ divorce, for example. But that does not appear to be the case however for Bethany Frankel and husband Jason Hoppy. In an earlier post we reported the couple’s pending divorce, however now Hoppy recently filed his own divorce papers in response to Frankel’s filing just a few weeks prior.
The couple married in the spring of 2010 and apparently had a prenuptial agreement signed prior to their nuptials, which is likely to play a role in the final divorce settlement.
This will indeed be a high-asset divorce as Frankel is said to be worth anywhere from $25 to $55 million and Hoppy is a successful real estate agent and reality television star just like his wife. Frankel’s divorce filings request primary custody of the couple’s 2-year-old daughter as well as child support, medical, dental and other insurance to be paid by Hoppy. Apparently Hoppy is requesting the same items in his divorce filings.
Both have also requested to maintain exclusive access to the marital home, which is a $5 million residence. Apparently Frankel moved out of the home before she announced the couple had separated just before Christmas of last year. Hoppy also wants his soon-to-be ex-wife to pay his attorney and accountants fees that he will likely incur during the divorce. Both have also requested that each spouse maintain life insurance naming the other and the couple’s child as beneficiaries.
Since it appears that both spouses are on the opposite sides of most every issue in this divorce a judge is likely to be involved in crafting the final divorce settlement. Oftentimes a celebrity divorce can offer other couples an example of what not to do in a divorce. If a couple is able to work amicably toward a mutually agreeable divorce settlement they will be able to retain more control over the final outcome of such important matters as child custody and visitation agreements.
