Nasty divorce tactics lead to DUI arrests and FBI investigations

Imagine finding yourself in the middle of a criminal investigation and your soon-to-be former spouse is using your criminal charges against you in family court. As any Georgia resident going through a divorce knows, divorce is not always nice. Even if you and your ex have gone through mediation, he or she may pull some dirty tricks in order to convince a divorce judge to give him or her a more beneficial divorce settlement or child custody agreement.

There is no doubt that there have been some strange divorce stories coming out of Marietta, but a group of women have stooped to a whole new level. At least five women worked with a private detective and former police officer to get proof that their husbands drank and drove. Although the women may deny it, it appears as if they paid the detective to get their husbands arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI).

After one of the detective's former employees recently told police about the detective and wives' antics, the FBI has stepped in to investigate. Investigators discovered that the detective would pay a pair of women to spend time with a client's husband. When the women had succeeded in getting the man drunk, they would suggest going to another location and the detective would call a contact within the police department and report a drunk driver.

So far, investigators have discovered at least five men who were duped into drunk driving by the private detective. After one man was set up by his wife, she later filed a motion with the family court about her concerns for her children's safety. The divorce judge granted her motion and the man was only allowed supervised visitation with his children.

Luckily for these men, prosecutors have been working with them to drop DUI charges and convictions on their records, but it is unclear what effect this will have on the men's divorce settlements or child custody agreements.
