Child custody is often one of the most heated disputes when a couple ends their relationship. While both parents want what is best for their children, they sometimes disagree about what is in a child’s best interests. We see this type of disagreement playing out in the current child custody battle between Mel Gibson and his former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

Gibson and Grigorieva have been fighting a very public custody battle over their young daughter Lucia. Desperately seeking custody, Grigorieva argued that the actor has a history of violence and should therefore not be allowed custody. To support her argument, she has brought up several instances in which Gibson’s frequent rage has caused injury to her and other family members.

For example, she said the actor attacked her in January of last year, leaving her with two broken dental veneers. She also claimed that he struck his youngest son on the head at a hockey game and on a different occasion threw a television set at his former wife during an argument.

Gibson had already pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery on a spouse or cohabitant regarding the January 2010 incident. He received three years’ probation and 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling.

Lucia’s passport has been surrendered so neither Gibson nor Grigorieva can take the child out of the country. It is expected that the two will continue the heated dispute in court as to custody, access arrangements and maintenance payments. Reports indicate that Gibson’s former wife, Robyn Moore, has been subpoenaed and will be questioned about whether the actor abused her or his children.
