Christina Aguilera's divorce becomes final

Divorce is never easy. Ending a relationship you thought would last forever is undoubtedly emotional and difficult. However, when the parties involved are ready to go their separate ways and willing to work together toward a reasonable resolution, the divorce proceedings can move along without added stress and frustration.

Recently, singer Christina Aguilera's divorce from Jordan Bratman became finalized. Because these two individuals were willing to work together to handle all aspects of the divorce and they had a prenuptial agreement in place, they were able to make it through the divorce proceedings relatively free of drama.

After five years of marriage, Aguilera and Bratman ended their relationship last September. The following month, the singer filed for divorce. In mid-April, the divorce was finalized.

One of the most important issues to be determined in the divorce proceeding was the custody of their 3-year-old son. Aguilera and Bratman agreed that their son needed both of them in his life, and Aguilera sought joint physical and legal custody of the boy. The two will now share custody of the child, remaining active participants in his life. This decision was made in the child's best interests and will likely help the boy adjust to the transition.

Another reason the divorce proceeded so smoothly is that Aguilera and Bratman entered into a prenuptial agreement. These premarital agreements are designed to protect a person's assets and specify how property is to be divided in the event of divorce or death. Because Aguilera and Bratman had already decided how their assets would be split, there was no need to argue over money.

Now that the divorce is final, the singer and her former husband are free to move on to the next stage of their lives. While this divorce took place outside Georgia, these same issues are factors in divorces all across America.
