Georgia man sentenced for fraudulent child support business

To a non-custodial parent who is making child support payments, child support may seem like an unfair financial burden, but it’s important to remember child support money is carefully allotted to be fair to both parties while still providing the best financial stability possible for the child. However, it is important to understand exactly how much you’re supposed to pay in child support and why. If you don’t monitor your child support payments carefully, you could make a serious mistake.

A Georgia man who was recently sentenced for a number of crimes admitted to being part of a fraudulent child support collection business. He and a few other associates created their agency, Child Support Services, and used deceptions to coerce non-custodial parents into paying child support funds to their agency. This little business reportedly earned the conspirators more than $1 million.

Parents in a divorce case must understand that child support is meant to be fair. In fact, since 2007, the child support laws in Georgia have become much more balanced, taking numerous factors into account before determining child support payments owed by a parent. The process is catered to each individual’s unique circumstances in an effort to find an amount that adequately provides for the child and his or her custodial parent while not financially crippling the non-custodial parent paying the child support.

Most important to note from this story is not to trust unknown entities demanding child support money. It’s important to know what your financial obligations are to your child and your ex-spouse. Carefully monitoring how much money you are paying for child support is also very wise. If you have any questions about the amount or whether or not you’re paying too much or too little child support, you can always consult a Georgia attorney.
