Changed circumstances? Change your child support!

When a Georgia family law judge issues a child support order, the order is made on the assumption that the situation is static. The truth of the matter is, though, that individuals' financial situations can change quite a bit between a divorce and the time their children turn 18. The parent paying child support could lose his or her job and no longer be able to afford child support. Or, the parent receiving child support might need more money after the paying parent gets a better job. Regardless of why, when situations do change, Georgia parents can ask for a modification of child support.

Charlie Sheen's Atlanta fans may have heard that Sheen recently sought a modification from his ex-wife Brooke Muller. The reason? Brooke no longer had custody of the children and so Sheen sought to drop his child support payments from $55,000 a month to $25,000 a month.

Earlier this year, Sheen's other ex-wife, Denise Richards, took temporary custody of Sheen and Muller's twin sons. Muller had been subject to an involuntary psychiatric hold. She was also sent to a rehabilitation facility. Although Muller has made strides toward regaining custody of the twins, Richards still remains the custodial guardian.

Sheen's case also showcases a unique way of modifying child support. Instead of using a court to modify the order, his lawyers were able to come to an agreement with Muller's lawyers. Whether this is an option when seeking a modification of child support in Georgia should be first discussed with a family law attorney.
