Demi Moore asks for alimony from Ashton Kutcher

Nearly everyone in DeKalb County has heard that Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are divorcing after being married for six years, but the divorce is not as easy as some may think. Much like husbands and wives across Georgia, Moore is asking for spousal support from Kutcher.

The Huffington Post reports that it is unlikely that Moore will receive any spousal support, as she is currently worth more than her soon-to-be ex-husband, but it is not certain. While alimony is typically paid by the higher-earning spouse to the lower-earning spouse, there are a variety of factors that must be considered before alimony is awarded. It would appear that Moore is basing her request for alimony on the explosion of Kutcher's career since their marriage.

Nor is it that odd for celebrities to ask for spousal support. The goal of spousal support is to prevent a divorce from financially shocking someone. To go from a dual-income household to a single-income household can be an extreme change, especially if there is a large gap in earning potential between the spouses, but alimony will help to equalize the spouses and prevent either of them from having a huge drop in living style. The same concept can apply to celebrities, too; like everyone else in DeKalb County, moving from a net worth of approximately $290 million to $150 million would be a big shock for Moore.

Just like the celebrities, divorce in Georgia can be complex, contentious and require considerable help from experienced family law attorneys. Whether it is in the pursuit of spousal support or navigating child custody, divorce can be too difficult to handle alone.
