Former Atlanta Braves star Andruw Jones to divorce

Former Atlanta Braves superstar Andruw Jones was recently served divorce papers from his wife of 10 years. The 35-year-old outfielder may not have been all that surprised by the divorce filing, as he was arrested Christmas morning at his Duluth, Georgia, home on charges of domestic violence against his wife, Nicole Jones.

According to reports, Jones was drunk, and he grabbed his wife's neck and threatened to kill her. When Gwinnett County police arrived on the scene, they reported that Andruw Jones was asleep and, when awakened, was confused about the details of what happened between him and his wife. As she had observable injuries on her neck, he now faces battery charges..

One week after this incident, Nicole Jones filed for divorce. She did not mention the alleged domestic violence, but described their long-term marriage in court papers as "irretrievably broken," the words Georgia courts use to describe the general cause of action for divorce.

She is also seeking a relatively standard set of rights and responsibilities in the divorce:

  • Legal and primary custody of their nine-year-old son
  • Child support
  • Alimony
  • Half of the couple's marital property

However, the couple did sign a pre-nuptial agreement, the details of which were not disclosed. She has asked the divorce court to nullify that agreement.

One issue that may come up in the divorce is Andruw Jones' international ties. He was born in Dutch-speaking CuraƧao, a Caribbean nation, and late last year he signed a one-year $3.5 million contract with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan's Pacific League.

In the past few years, Japan has increasingly been under international pressure to reform its child custody laws. It is not a signatory of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, and the U.S. State Department says that abductions of children by their custodial parents to Japan are among of the most prevalent issues for its Bureau of Consular Affairs and one of the most difficult to resolve.

Jones has another child from a previous relationship. Presumably, Andruw Jones has no intention of abducting any of his children to Japan or elsewhere, but it might be wise to include a detailed agreement on international travel in the divorce.

In addition to his 1996 World Series play with the Braves, the five-time All-Star has also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Texas Rangers, the Chicago White Sox, and New York Yankees.
