When religion and divorce don't play nice

As divorce becomes increasingly accepted in our society, there are larger and larger numbers of people in Georgia whose "till death do us part" turns out to be a lot sooner than death. While divorce and religion have historically not gotten along, many religious denominations are now recognizing and permitting partners to go their separate ways. But for some of the most devout, there may never be a time when it is religiously acceptable to end a marriage.

It is difficult to end a marriage, but it is even more difficult to end a marriage when you or your religious community doesn't believe you that should. For some people in Marietta, a marriage is not just a legal union, nor is it even solely an emotional bond that connects two people. Rather, it is a covenant or promise before a religious deity to be devoted to a partner. When marriage takes on that religious aspect, it can be very difficult to divorce. Some fear that it will sever their connection to their faith.

Some within the family law profession say, however, that divorce may actually make one's faith stronger. Leaning on that deity or working with a member of the clergy may help to build a stronger connection to religion and, potentially, find a way to reconcile with a former spouse.

With a near 50 percent divorce rate in the United States, Marietta residents may think that religion no longer plays a role in divorce, but for many people, religion is a major factor in how divorce is carried out.
